A Finnish internationalist Mixu joined Hibernian in 1998 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and proved a most astute purchase. His goals not only helped Hibs escape from the first division, but once back in the Premier League he showed enough experience and goal awareness to be a major player. Famously he scored 3 times against Hearts in a 6-2 win at Easter Road. Mixu came to Scotland with Dundee United and scored 33 goals there before moving to Aberdeen where he bagged 23 goals. He then moved to England and starred with Bolton (15 goals) before joining Wolves then Hibs. In the summer of 2001 he moved from to Strasbourg in France but spent an unhappy season there playing only 8 matches. He rejoined Hibernian shortly into the start of the 2002/03 campaign and had his first goal in the awful 4-1 home defeat by Dunfermline. However, things picked up following that defeat and he led the line with his usual mix of enthusiasm and know-how as the season wore on. Mixu scored 18 goals in gaining 70 full Finland international caps.

A talented full-back John, who was born in Belfast in 1937, was signed from Linfield in October 1963. Although he played in only 21 league games for Hibs it was clear that he was a very talented individual indeed and with every performance he seemed to improve. It was always going to be a battle hanging on to such a prodigious talent and he was sold to Sunderland in November 1964. He settled well on Wearside and played in a century of games for Sunderland. John won 14 caps for Northern Ireland.

The son of John Paterson, Craig chose Hibs ahead of Dundee United and how grateful Hibs were of that decision. He quickly proved himself to be an outstanding prospect at centre-half and whilst commanding in the air and solid on the ground he also displayed a neat use of the ball. Craig was signed in December 1977 and made his debut against Dundee in a friendly fixture at Dens Park in February 1978. Thereafter he edged his way increasingly into the first team picture. Capped by Scotland at Under-21 level he was a rock at the heart of the Hibs defence in the early 1980s and was voted Hibernian Player of the Year in 1981. Sadly he left for Rangers in July 1982 for a fee in the region o £225,000. It was money that cash-strapped Hibs could hardly refuse. Although he played over 100 matches for Rangers he won only two league cup badges, but with Motherwell and then Kilmarnock he continued to show the ability that convinced many he ought to have been a Scotland internationalist. When he finished playing with Kilmarnock he squeezed in spells with Hamilton, Glenafton and Forth Wanderers before settling on a career in the media as a radio pundit.

Born in Colchester, England, John worked as a representative for a brewer firm and was a versatile defender, capable of playing either centre-back or left back. Signed from Penicuik Thistle in 1944 he proved himself a fine centre-half and was capped by the Scottish League against Wales in 1953. He later played with Ayr United.

Signed in 1975 as a teenager, Willie had been with Burnley for two seasons before becoming home-sick. He made his debut at Motherwell late in the 75/76 season, earning a penalty within minutes of coming on as a substitute. The Kilsyth based winger moved to Falkirk in 1979.

A very versatile left-sided player Willie scored 3 goals from 11 outings in the 46/47 season. However, he hankered for more regular first team football and elected to try his luck elsewhere. He moved to St Johnstone in 1947 and played over 100 games for the Perth outfit between 1947 and 1952.

A joiner to trade, Jackie (as he was known) was signed in 1954 from Armadale Thistle. He was a Scottish Youth internationalist. He became a Hibs regular shortly after his 18th birthday. His debut came in the 1954/55 season and over the next couple of seasons he impressed sufficiently to earn 3 Under-23 caps for Scotland. In July 1960 he moved to Manchester City and he spent two seasons at Maine Road. John won 1 full Scotland caps and 5 Under-23 caps.

This delightfully named forward joined Hibernian in 1948 from Armadale Thistle. Manager Hugh Shaw could be well pleased with his signing for early in 1949 he scored in five consecutive league games. Sadly competition was fierce at Easter Road and with Smith, Linwood, Cuthbertson and Reilly all pushing for places Angus was sold to Falkirk in December 1949. He did not forgive Hibs easily and scored within 30 seconds in a thrilling 5-4 Hibs League Cup win (Hibs going on to reach the final against Motherwell in that season). He still delighted Hibs fans from time to time, however, whilst at Falkirk … most notably by scoring 3 for the Bairns in a 5-4 win over Hearts in March 1951. After Falkirk he played with East Fife but the feeling is that with 7 goals from 7 games in his first season at Easter Road he was extremely unlucky not to carve out a longer career with Hibs.

Joined Hibernian as a 25 year-old from Dundee, along with Paul Tosh, in a £200,000 deal in March, having previously spent his career in England. Born in Lewisham he has served Norwich, Charlton, Sunderland, Portsmouth, Bradford City, Millwall and Peterborough United. At 6’0” tall he should have been able to lift Jim Duffy’s side but failed to have the expected impact. In all Lee played only 11 league games in the colours of Hibernian.

Joined Hibs in September 1998 on loan from Coventry City and proved a most able full-back. Born in Dublin in 1976 he would have been an ideal asset for Hibs full time but after his loan spell expired he was unable to come to a more permanent arrangement. Barry played 13 league games in Hibernian’s promotion winning season of 1998/99 and scored goals against both Morton and St. Mirren. He came back to Scotland to play with Ayr United at one stage, then served St. Patrick’s Athletic and Oldham Athletic.

Signed in 1966 from Glasgow United, this Edinburgh born youngster was essentially a left half. He made his first team debut against St Johnstone in April 1969 and within a few years was helping the club in Scottish Cup semi-final ties and jousting with the best in Scotland. His spell with Hibs was actually broken, he was granted a free transfer in 1970 and was set to emigrate to South Africa when Hibs changed their mind

Prior to Mixu Paatelainen, Pat had the honour of being the last Hibernian player to score a hat-trick against Hearts. Signed in October 1963 from Blackpool, Pat was a clever, creative midfielder possessed of a very cultured left-foot. He had made his name in Motherwell’s talented Ancell Babes midfield, whom he joined in 1955 from Bridgeton Waverley. Whilst at Fir Park he was capped four times by Scotland, and six times by the Scottish League, making a rather unfortunate international debut in the 9-3 debacle against England at Wembley in 1961. Pat joined Blackpool in 1962 but did not settle and a year later he joined Walter Galbraith’s Hibernian side for £30,000. He settled quickly and had a goal at St Mirren just weeks later in a 1-1 draw. With his subtle promptings several players thrived around him and Neil Martin went on to finish with 20 goals in his 28 league games that season. The following season (64/65) Pat grabbed 8 goals himself and was a part of the side that reached the Scottish Cup semi-final only to lose to Dunfermline at Tynecastle Park. After his Edinburgh playing days ended he moved to East Fife as player/assistant manager before taking up coaching roles with Partick Thistle, Hibs, Motherwell and Hamilton.
